Somewhat off the beaten track, Sifnos is an island for connoisseurs. (...) The island attracts its own pleasant crowd of regulars — artists and intellectuals, rather than party animals and beach bums - who appreciate the uniqueness of the island: its landscape, architecture, traditional vibe, pottery workshops and famously good food. Feel part of that crowd by staying in this glorious 19th-century neoclassical mansion in the hilltop village of Artemonas; it has been owned by the same family of ship owners, musicians, journalists and a theatre director for six generations. Don’t expect butlers, flat screen TVs, Jacuzzis or even ensuite bathrooms: this is the real thing. Prepare meals in the traditional kitchen (or walk to the local taverna), take in the views from the terrace, admire family heirlooms in the living room, and sleep on brass beds. The elegance of it is restrained; the charm, overwhelming.
