Had a great time!
Loved the place! It was just like pictured. Luz and staff help in anyway they can! Right on beach! Roberta is great! She answers correspondance and answers questions!
Amazing - the perfect alternative
My GF and I travelled to the DR for a wedding, spending the first week at a resort, and a few days after at Villa Chiara. Put simply, I immensely regret spending even one night at the resort and not here - this was infinitely better in every respect.
The apartment has everything you need, is comfortable, and is spacious. AC in the bedroom kept it chilly for sleep, and the breeze with the windows open was awesome during the day. I spent most of the day on the speedy wifi sitting on the patio.
The staff there are awesome - everything you could ask for, and very friendly. I was slightly worried about sending money sight unseen to roberta, but she was extremely attentive to our emails and made me feel comfortable.
The surrounding restaurants are AWESOME. I highly highly suggest TRONCO BEACH - to get to it go around the condo immediately beside this one and walk up their alley way, it's about 100 feet off the beach. Easily the best meals we had in DR (went back a few times!). Kats corner for breakfast burritos and Citrus were also fantastic. D'angelos was OK, and soles... uhhmm... had a nice view. Our credit cards (TD Canada Trust) didn't work with the mobile machines (even after phoning visa, they weren't getting the transaction at all from our two separate cards both brand new with PIN), so the only place it worked was d'angelos - that put us in a bit of a pickle as the closest ATM is like 30 minute walk away.
If you want cold beer, all the presidente is the same price (printed on the bottle cap) - the pirate gift shop thing has a little bar in it right at the back that has them for cheap (along with cold coke's 40 pesos). Skip the close market and go to the one by the road in the plaza (takes visa, big & nice)
I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone - and it is a FRACTION of the cost of the resorts for a better experience. Not for a second did we feel unsafe or any of the junk that people try to scare you with.
The only thing that wasn't easy was finding / getting into the gate, as you need a key - we got to the right area by giving our taxi the info Roberta provided, but I had to get a guy who was sitting outside holding a rope (haha) to call ms luz (gave him $1). If this happens to you, walk through the pirate gift shop thing to the beach, then around soles bar to the apartments, as there is no gate from the beach.
Would also highly recommend doing Punta Cana Mike "real" dominican tours - google it.
Everything you need, and then some!
Ditto on everything from the previous review. Senora Luz is a sweet hardworking housekeeper. Janielle will set you up with anything you need. The apartment is spacious. This not a fancy place, but has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. We talked to visitors who were staying at all-inclusive hotels. Not only are they far more expensive, but are not in walking distance to the local restaurants and stores, but they also charge you for electricity. The best part of the place is the huge deck/patio, 2/3rds is in the sun, and 1/3 shaded by a palm hut structure. The shower had good water pressure and temperature. The bed is a bit firm for me, but we slept well most nights. It is not quite ocean front, but you do have a view of the ocean from the deck. You are only steps to the incredible beach. Grocery markets and restaurants are a 10 to 15 minute walk. We only did one excursion (Monkey Land) which was quite enjoyable, although a bumpy ride to get there. I have posted several reviews of local restaurants on Travelocity (barrysmarine2015).
Some comments on Punta Cana and Bavaro area:
- The exchange rate is 45 DR pesos to 1 US dollar. If you are not good with math, download an exchange app to your phone. Better yet, walk to El Dorado Plaza and change your dollars to local pesos.
- Some restaurants include tip on the bill, others do not. If you ask, all will say tip is not included. A local explained to us if you see "IBIS" on the bill, that is an acronym for tip.
- Beach vendors can be aggressive. They also can be dishonest. One tried to charge me $9 US for a Presidente beer. The going rate on the beach is about 150 pesos, or just over $3 US. In town, beer is about 100 pesos. This happened to us twice.
- Helicopter tours fly over almost all day. Somewhat annoying.
- Service is slow in Punta Cana almost everywhere. Some places are slower than others. It's island time. You will get use to it.
- The Pirate tunnel is next to the rental. There are several vendors there offering their wares. Don't go in unless you plan on buying something. The vendors will try very hard to get you to purchase. They are just trying to make a living. Everything is negotiable.
Spacious, clean, and RIGHT on the beach!!!
My husband and I decided to visit the DR for the first time to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, and we had a blast!! Our correspondence with Roberta (property manager) went smoothly-- she responded quickly and all transactions/plans went great. Roberta reserved us an airport taxi, Angel, who was very nice and brought us to our awesome condo. Upon arrival we were greeted by Ms. Luz, a very sweet and hard working little lady, who showed us the ropes(she introduced us to Jeanelle, very resourceful for rum and excursions). Our apartment exceeded expectations, it was HUGE, had two balconies(three if you include the large, amazing rooftop area)- one of which we enjoyed coffee every morning while gazing at the turquoise water. The decor was cute and the apt was very quiet and clean. Basic linens, kitchenware, and big countertop water jug were provided- pack soap and leave time for a trip to a local mercado for other necessities (coffee, snacks, etc). Basic level Spanish is a huge plus; we are very happy to have stayed away from the many Superclubs but speaking Spanish came in useful to communicate with Ms. Luz and locals. Go to el tranco next door, and the pizza joint down the road for dinner. The DR is a little more expensive than other islands. Make sure the fish are biting before you indulge in a fishing trip. Go to Saona. Water is absolutely gorgeous and warm!! Roberta is always there for you if you need anything!!! Lovely way to spend an anniversary!!!!
